A Significant Investment in Polk County’s Future
Hospital leadership shared how Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital represents one of the region’s largest healthcare investments, designed to bring advanced medical services closer to home for Polk County residents.
The state-of-the-art facility includes:
- More than 300 inpatient beds
- 69 emergency and observation beds
- 11 operating rooms
- Four cardiac and interventional suites
Future expansion plans include additional specialty services and the addition of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), further strengthening the area’s healthcare infrastructure.
For residents, this means greater access to specialized care without the need to travel to neighboring counties. As Polk County’s population continues to increase, local access to healthcare becomes increasingly important for families, employers, and the overall quality of life of the community.
Providing Comprehensive Care Close to Home
One of the most impressive aspects of the hospital is the breadth of services available under one roof.
Team members learned about the hospital’s comprehensive service lines, which include: Heart and Vascular Care, Emergency and Critical Care, Labor and Delivery, Stroke and Neuroscience Care, Orthopedic Services, Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Surgical Services, Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, Urology and Nephrology, and Laboratory and Pathology Services.
The hospital’s approach reflects a commitment to creating a full continuum of care for Polk County residents. By expanding access to advanced and specialized services locally, healthcare providers can help reduce barriers to care and improve health outcomes throughout the region.
Investing in the Healthcare Workforce of Tomorrow
While new facilities and technology are important, one of the most impactful conversations centered on people.
Hospital representatives discussed their partnerships with local Career Academies, colleges, and educational institutions to introduce students to healthcare careers and create pathways into high-demand professions.
These efforts are helping students see opportunities they may not have otherwise considered while also addressing a challenge facing healthcare systems nationwide: building a strong future workforce.
The Quality of Life Team also learned about tuition assistance opportunities available through Polk State College and other workforce development initiatives designed to help students and adult learners pursue careers in healthcare.
These investments extend beyond filling positions. They help create career opportunities for residents while ensuring Polk County has the skilled professionals needed to meet growing healthcare demands in the years ahead.
Supporting Community Health Beyond Hospital Walls
The discussion also highlighted Orlando Health’s commitment to improving community health through partnerships and local investment.
Hospital leaders shared information about the organization’s annual Community Grant Program, which supports initiatives focused on improving health and wellness throughout the communities it serves. These grant opportunities help nonprofit organizations and community partners address local health priorities and expand access to services that improve quality of life.
This emphasis on collaboration resonated strongly with Polk Vision’s mission of bringing organizations together to address complex community challenges. Healthcare outcomes are influenced by many factors beyond clinical care, making partnerships among healthcare providers, educators, nonprofits, businesses, and community leaders more important than ever.
Why This Matters
Access to quality healthcare is a critical component of a thriving community.
As Polk County continues to grow, ensuring residents have access to advanced medical services, a strong healthcare workforce, and community-based health resources will play an important role in maintaining and improving quality of life across the county.
The visit reinforced that healthcare is not only about treating illness. It is also about investing in people, creating opportunities, strengthening partnerships, and building systems that help communities remain healthy and resilient for generations to come.
